I never drew a face card So I threw away all my decks And I left my letters in the care of good friends For fear they might grow legs I'm giving away everything I'm starting anew Look after my rings and strings I'll come back for them soon And there's a thunderbird in the basement But the plates expired with you But that doesn't stop me from driving it I painted it ocean blue I'm giving away everything I'm starting anew Look after my rings and strings I'll come back for them soon I'm a long way from Atlanta But I remember those magnolia trees And hiding inside from the Civil War ghosts Trying to keep their uniforms clean I'm giving away everything I'm starting anew Look after my rings and strings I'll come back for them soon And the water of the Mississippi River Flows strongly through our veins And my heart is a catfish flopping around But he's grown rather tame I'm giving away everything I'm starting anew Look after my rings and strings I'll come back for them soon

Where she leads me I do not know But it's fishing season and it's time to go Where the salmon jump and the waves are high Where threadbare clouds go rolling on by Cast your line in with mine And I don't know if it'll sink or float But if you never try it you’re gonna miss the boat And don't ask me what you'll pull out It could be an old tire or it could be a pretty rainbow trout Cast your line in with mine She's out there sailing and I am here on shore I could keep what I have or I could ask for more And you're gonna have to kill a worm or two And you can't be squeamish cause a fake one won't do Cast your line in with mine Being landlocked is no way to spend your days Land’s dry and dusty It's got no breaking waves So take your pole and meet me at the dock Where all the cormorants sleep and go to flock Where those fished before us fished for all their lives Fished for their dinners and fished to say goodbye Cast your line in with mine.

Amelia 02:07
Your poor mother called me, it was 3:15 AM She said "I'm sorry to wake you" I said "I don't give a damn" She said "Amelia got sicker, her lungs have got that rattling sound. Oh how did this happen, and what do we do now?" And now you're jumping through puddles Showing up in my dreams With your red rubber boots on You're the star of the scene I drove down to see you in the middle of the night You were fast asleep but you weren't breathing right The doctors were worried but they were doing their best Taking your heart beat and listening to your chest And your room hasn't been touched It's like a museum of art And when the dust starts to gather I tear it apart There's an old wooden music box sitting up on your shelf But it cries when it warbles, I made it myself On the day that you came out into this world Why'd you leave it so soon my darling girl And now you're jumping through puddles Showing up in my dreams With your red rubber boots on You're the star of the scene

Hard Living 04:16
I'm a big fan of this hard living I keep on taking and it keeps on giving And it hasn't caught up to me just yet And if I get cancer that's all right Cause I'll put one hell of a fight Just give me a bottle and I'll be all set And I work too but it's not like yours I'm a singing wandering troubadour And I've travelled many miles through many towns And I do my work in the dark of the night Cause I got burned by the sun's bright light And I carry stories that weigh many pounds Cause I'm a big fan of this hard living I keep on taking and it keeps on giving And it hasn't caught up to me just yet And if my liver goes that's okay If I've said the things I want to say And I'm surrounded by all the people that I've met I like to think Townes van Zandt was my dad And I think about all the problems he had And i hear 'For the Sake of the Song' and it makes me cry After he sang, he'd smoke and he'd drink And when I hear his voice I like to think About if he ever found his shoes so he could fly I left the desert sand in which I was raised And maybe I'll go back one of these days After the sheriff who's looking for me is long gone Cause I don't want to be like Pancho, he died too young And he left Lefty with just the songs that they sung Poor Lefty keeps waking up alone in the dawn. Cause I'm a big fan of this hard living I keep on taking and it keeps on giving And it hasn't caught up to me just yet And if my liver goes that's okay If I've said the things I want to say And I'm surrounded by all the people that I've met My night starts when everyone goes to bed And I sit in my chair and I scratch my head Wondering why they don't want to see the sacred dark I'll go out and play a few songs And sometimes a few people will come along And when I see them smiling, it gives me a spark I'm a big fan of this hard living I keep on taking and it keeps on giving And it hasn't caught up with me just yet And if my liver goes that's just fine Cause I love how I've used my time And it hasn't caught up with me just yet. No it hasn't caught up with me just yet.
